An ancient Italo-Geometric skyphos with off-set lip, and the shoulder decorated with a band of alternating linear patterns in darker slip.
Geometric pottery production began as the Greek world reemerged from the Dark Age after the decline of Mycenaean Bronze Age civilization. The shapes and ornamental motifs that would eventually be predominant in Classical Greek pottery production are at first evident in Greek Geometric pottery of the 8th century BC.
