Cypriot Bichrome Chalice

An ancient Cypriot bichrome chalice on a low foot, with abbreviated handles set close to the body, and bands of linear decoration and concentric circles in black slip and added red.

Cypro-Archaic.
Ca. 700 - 600 BC.
Height: 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm).

Bichrome ware originated in early Iron Age Phoenicia and spread to Cyprus where it became for a time the dominant pottery style.

Formerly in the collection of Artemis A. W. Joukowsky (1930-2020) and Dr. Martha Sharp Joukowsky (1936-2022), Providence, Rhode Island; acquired from Kolokasides, Nicosia, Cyprus in 1968.
