Vespasian 69-79 AD

Silver tetradrachm, 24 mm, 14.90 gm.
Obv: Laureate head of Vespasian right.
Rev: Eagle standing left on club, with wings displayed, holding wreath in beak; palm frond to left; A (date) in legend.

Antioch mint, dated “New Holy Year” 1 (AD 69).

Vespasian was born in Falacrina, he rose to command during the invasion of Britain in 43 AD. After a bleak period as a mule dealer, he was appointed by Nero to quell the Jewish Revolt, which he did. He was proclaimed emperor in Alexandria, defeated Vitellius at Cremona, and died in Reate.
