Roman Marble Cinerarium Lid

An ancient Roman marble funerary inscription with central recession for pouring libations, reading, DIS MANIBVS P STATIO HILARO V A XII M VIII DIEB XXV TEDIA RESTITUTA FILIO PIISSIMO FECIT; “To the Shades of the Dead, for Publius Statius Hilarus (who) lived 12 years, 8 months, and 25 days, Tedia Restituta made (this monument) for her most pious son.”

Ca. 1st - 2nd century AD.
Length: 11 in. (28 cm).

Cineraria which held the cremated remains of the deceased bore inscriptions naming the individual and often those who provided for the the funerary monument. Some cineraria had recesses a the top through which libations were poured, often wine, honey, milk or olive oil. The cinerarium was often placed in a family vault or Columbaria.
