Roman Gold, Garnet, and Pearl Earrings

A pair of ancient Roman gold earrings with three drops set with garnet and gold beads and replacement vintage natural pearls.

Ca. 1st - 3rd century AD.
Height: 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm).

These earrings were known as crotalia (from the Greek word for castanets) because the pearl pendant would produce a jingling noise when worn. They were quite popular with Roman women, and many examples have been found at Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Formerly in an American private collection.
