Roman Bronze Phalerae

A group of three ancient Roman bronze phalerae from a horse harness of intricately open worked designs with scrolling foliate patterns.

Ca. 1st - 3rd century AD.
Maximum length: 6 3/4 in. (17 cm).

Roman military phalerae were metal discs, usually made from gold, silver or bronze. They were used for military awards as well as to ornament horse trappings, where they were attached to the leather straps of the harness.
