Roman Bronze Nereid Riding a Ketos

An ancient Roman bronze Nereid seated on the back of the stag-headed sea monster with forked tail and wings at its side; the Nereid’s garment around her waist and her cape billowing above her head; on an integrally cast rectangular base with a pelta shield at front.

Ca. 3rd - 4th century AD.
Height: 3 1/4 in. (8.3 cm).

This bronze group likely came from a group of four representing the attendant Nereids of Thetis delivering the arms of Achilles across the sea.

Formerly in a Swiss private collection, 1990s; subsequently in a New York private collection.
