The adopted son of Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius served as co-emperor with his adopted brother Lucius Verus. His reign was marked by constant warfare, plague and insurrection. A devoted stoic, his ‘Meditations’ are still widely read. He was the last of a string of five wise and virtuous emperors. He died on his camp bed along the Danube.
