An ancient Egyptian bronze uraeus, a rearing cobra, with recessed eyes under the hood with blue and red glass inlays, surmounted by a solar disk.

Ca. 700 - 30 BC.
Height: 3 1/8 in. (8 cm).

The Uraeus, a rearing cobra, was used as a symbol of sovereignty, royalty, divinity in ancient Egypt. It was often placed on the front of crowns worn by the Pharaoh and various gods and goddesses.

Formerly in a Virginia private collection, acquired from Galerie Gunter Puhze, Freiburg, Germany.
