Egyptian Bronze Cat

An ancient Egyptian bronze amulet of a cat seated in an alert pose with an incised necklace, a suspension loop at the back, on an integral plinth with tang below.

Late Period,
Ca. 700 - 30 BC.
Height inclusive of tang: 2 1/4 in. (6 cm).

The female cat was seen as the earthly manifestation of Bastet, goddess of Joy. Her cult center was at Bubastis in the Nile Delta. Here the carefully mummified bodies of highly revered cats have been found in great numbers.
