Obverse: Forepart of a lion, facing backward.
Reverse: Quadripartitie incuse square.

Minted in Cherronesos, Thrace, near Gallipoli.
Ca. 400-350 BC.

Cherronesos was founded in the 8th century BC by settlers from Miletus. It was a major wheat growing district. After a period of domination by Sparta, then Athens, it eventually succumbed to the Thracians and then to Philip of Macedon in 338 BC.
