Byzantine Papyrus Scroll

An ancient Byzantine large papyrus manuscript written in Demotic Greek text in transversa charta style in two sections, from a scroll or rotulus; the preserved text is part of a will and deed of gift signed by four of seven witnesses.

Egypt.
Ca. 4th - 6th century AD.
Length of Will: 16 1/4 in. (41.2 cm).Length of Deed: 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm).

Wills of the early Byzantine period are very rare.

Formerly with Dikran Kelekian, Paris, 1950s; subsequently in a New York private collection, acquired in 1983.
