An Etruscan Bronze Mirror: Herakles and Apollo

An ancient Etruscan bronze mirror of circular form with an integral tang handle; the concave reverse side is incised with a scene of Herakles wearing the Nemean lionskin and Apollo, seated nude conversing, surrounded by ivy.

Northern Italy.
Ca. 4th Century BC.
Height: 8 1/4 in. (21 cm).

Etruscan mirrors (malena), were produced in a number of workshops from the 6th to the 1st century BC. The earlier examples tend to be larger, and more elaborate, with wood or bone handles. The later examples are generally more compact, with integral handles and less ambitious incised scenes.
