An ancient Roman marble head of a bearded philosopher, with nose skewed to the right, a short cropped beard, and prominent lower lip, possibly Theophrastos.
As a close friend and student of Aristotle, Theophrastos led the Peripatetic school of philosophy in late 3rd- early 2nd century (BC) Athens. Although less than ten percent of his work survived, over two hundred treatises are attributed to Theophrastos. These treatises cover a large range of philosophic and scientific topics, but have a large focus on exploration and systemization of botany and the larger natural world.
