Roman Bronze Phalera: Acteon

An ancient Roman bronze horse trapping or phalera with an attached applique depicting Acteon being attacked by his two hunting dogs.

Ca. 1st - 3rd century AD.
Height: 6 1/8 in. (15. 5 cm).

For spying on Artemis as she bathed, Acteon was punished by being transformed into a deer and devoured by his own hunting dogs.
