An ancient Roman bronze head of the god Mercury (Hermes) with silver inlaid eyes, wearing a laurel wreath on his winged head.

Mercury (Greek: Hermes) was a pastoral divinity dating to the earliest Greek legends. He was the messenger and herald of the gods. He was also the patron of travelers, merchants, shepherds, and thieves. In the Roman period, he was especially associated with commerce.

Formerly in the George R. Francoeur Trust, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, acquired from Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, prior to 2010.
