Traditionally, the Phokians controlled the sanctuary of Delphi; they lost control of Delphi in the Sacred Wars in the 6th century. At the battle of Plataea they were on the Persian side. In 449 the Spartans again expelled the Phokians from Delphi, but with he help of Athens, they soon recaptured it.
