Maya Pair of Bowls with Monkeys

A pair of Pre-Columbian Maya bowls each with three squatting monkeys and band of stylized fish or wave motif above.

Late Classic Period. Ca. 550 - 950 AD.
Height: 3 3/4 & 4 in. (9.5 & 10.2 cm).

The Maya were the dominant culture in Meso-America between the 3rd century BC and the end of the first millennium AD. Their architecture and art are of the finest found in Pre-Columbian America. Their highly developed pottery industry produced a wide variety of vase forms that varied widely in their decorative motifs and functions.

Formerly in a Connecticut private collection, acquired at Sotheby's, New York, 1988; previously Nasli Heeramaneck collection (d. 1971).
