Luristan Bronze Sword

An ancient Luristan bronze sword with a long tapering doubled edged blade with a prominent mid-rib. The tang is set within an elaborate quadrangular openwork grip terminating with a large cone shaped pommel.

Ca. 1500 - 800 BC.
Length: 22 3/4 in. (57.5 cm).

Luristan objects, including impressive and numerous decorative bronze horse trappings and weapons, are found mainly in western Persia. Luristan artifacts are most likely the work of the ancient Medes, an Indo-European group that eventually dominated Persia.

Formerly in a California private collection; previously in the Axel Guttmann collection, Berlin, Germany.
