An ancient Etruscan bucchero kyathos with the cup on a high, flaring foot, the strap handle rises high above the rim, the apex of the handle adorned with a Janus-faced baboon wearing a conical hat; the body decorated with relief frieze of buds alternating, an incised zig-zag band framed by lines on exterior of the lip. Two incised lines on the interior of lip, with an applique head of a man where handle joins the rim.
Bucchero ware was the distinct local pottery type of ancient Etruria. It is distinguished by its delicately potted black earthen fabric as well as its glossy, burnished black surface, often with incision work. Bucchero ware was produced through the unique “reduction” method in which it was fired.
