Egyptian Faience Ring: Sekhmet

An ancient Egyptian green faience ring with a recessed image of the goddess Sekhmet standing in profile with the head of a lioness wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt, holding a papyrus stalk scepter.

New Kingdom, 18th - 19th Dynasty,
Ca. 1550 - 1080 BC.
Length: 1 1/2 in (3.9 cm).

Sekhmet was a warrior goddess of Upper Egypt depicted as a lioness. She was also a solar deity, and was associated with different aspects of Hathor, Mut, and Bastet. She often wears a solar disk headdress, and uraeus which associates her with Wadjet and royalty.

Formerly with Brummer Gallery, New York, 1940s; subsequently by descent to an Atlanta, Georgia private collection.
