Egyptian Diorite Jar

An ancient Egyptian Middle Kingdom diorite cylindrical jar, tapering from the lip towards a slightly flared base.

Middle Kingdom, 11th Dynasty.
Ca. 2133 - 2040 BC.
Height: 2 1/8 in. (5.2 cm).

The shape of this vase is paralleled by ceramic vessels of the same period commonly used for tomb offerings.

Formerly in the collection of Wilhelm Horn (1870-1959), Berlin, Germany, acquired from Andre Birchers, Cairo, 1933; Christie's, London, December 11, 1987, lot 208; subsequently in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
