Egyptian Bronze Uraeus

An ancient Egyptian bronze uraeus, a rearing cobra with rivets at the base for attachment to a crown.

Late Period.
Ca. 700 - 30 BC.
Height: 3 1/4 in. (8.2 cm).

The Uraeus, a rearing cobra, was used as a symbol of sovereignty, royalty, divinity in ancient Egypt. It was often placed on the front of crowns worn by the Pharaoh and various gods and goddesses.

Formerly in a New York private collection, acquired from King David Antiquities, Jerusalem, 1980.
