Egyptian Bronze Baboon

An ancient Egyptian bronze statuette of a seated baboon wearing a pectoral and a solar disc crown.

Late Period, 26th Dynasty.
Ca. 664 - 525 BC.
Height: 3 in. (7.6 cm).

The baboon was especially associated with the scribal god Thoth. Thoth played a role in maintaining the universe, along with his wife Maat (truth). Thoth was also heavily associated with scribal procedures and writing, and by extension with magic, science, and judgment.
