An ancient Egyptian Old Kingdom small banded alabaster vessel of flaring cylindrical form.

Old Kingdom.
Ca. 2575 - 2134 BC.
Height: 2 7/8 in. (6.8 cm).

Alabaster was prized by the ancient Egyptians for its translucence and decorative veining, qualities which were further emphasized in the carving process. The shape of this vase is paralleled by ceramic vessels of the same period commonly used for tomb offerings.

Formerly in an old English private collection; Bonham's, London, December 7, 1993, lot 319; subsequently in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
