Daunian Kyathos

An ancient Daunian high handled kyathos, a wine ladle, decorated with dark brown slip; horizontal bands and vertical lines as well as geometric motifs

Northern Apulia.
Ca. 5th century BC.
Height: 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm).

The Daunians were native to the Adriatic coast of Italy. Despite the popularity of Greek and later South-Italian colonial Greek figural pottery, Daunian ware continued in its localized production to the end of the 4th century BC. Daunian ware is more rustic compared to black-glazed and red-figure ware with which it is contemporary.

cf.: M. Mazzei, La Daunia Antica, (Milan, 1984), p. 175, pl. 218.
Formerly in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
