Daunian Kantharos

An ancient Daunian kantharos with high arching handles, everted lip, and leaves on the shoulder.

Northern Apulia.
Ca. 5th century BC.
Height: 5 1/4 in. (13.5 cm).

The Daunians were native to the Adriatic coast of Italy. Despite the popularity of Greek and later South-Italian colonial Greek figural pottery, Daunian ware continued in its localized production to the end of the 4th century BC. Daunian ware is more rustic compared to black-glazed and red-figure ware with which it is contemporary.

Formerly in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
