Daunian Kalathos

An ancient Daunian large kalathos with black glazed interior, olive leaf and spiral wave bands in black on the exterior and concentric circles on the bottom of base.

Northern Apulia.
Ca. 5th century BC.
Height: 7 1/2 in. (19 cm).

The Daunians were native to the Adriatic coast of Italy. Despite the popularity of Greek and later South-Italian colonial Greek figural pottery, Daunian ware continued in its localized production to the end of the 4th century BC. Daunian ware is more rustic compared to black-glazed and red-figure ware with which it is contemporary.

Formerly in the collection of Jerome Eisenberg, New York.
