Danish Neolithic Stone Double Axe

A large Danish Neolithic gray hard stone double axe head, of the boat-axe type, drilled through the center with a shaft hole.

Found in Denmark, Gelsted, Dorf Sondergarde.

Ca. 3000 - 2000 BC.

Length: 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm).

Stone axes were important tools and trade items in Neolithic Europe. Polished stone axes, which are more durable than flaked axes, were essential for clearing forests during the Neolithic period, when crop and livestock farming were first introduced into Europe. Late Neolithic examples were drilled through to attach to a handle.

Formerly in the family collection of Alf Roersen, found at Gelsted, Dorf Sondergarde, Denmark in 1957.
