Cycladic Greek Marble Head

A large ancient Cycladic Greek marble head of the Late Spedos Type with a sloping lyre-shaped head and raised triangular elongated nose.

Early Cycladic II, Late Spedos Period.

Ca. 2500-2400 BC.

Height: 4 3/4 in. (12.1 cm).

The role and meaning of these figures in Cycladic culture is not known. While they have been found almost exclusively in graves, it is not clear whether they were made specifically for burials. The Spedos type, named after an Early Cycladic cemetery on Naxos, was widely distributed throughout the Cyclades and beyond.
