Egypt.
Ca. 500 - 900 AD.
Height: 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm).

Ancient Coptic textiles survive due to the arid Egyptian environment. The textiles were usually of linen or wool with designs in red, blue, yellow, green, purple, black and brown. The dyes were derived from madder, indigo, woad, saffron, the murex shell, and the kermes insect. The textiles were usually parts of elaborate tunics. The garment was adopted in Egypt during Roman rule.
